Shivers

General

Decades ago, rejected by the scientific community and divorced by his wife, the eccentric archeologist and self-proclaimed professor Hubert Windlenot moved out of England and settled down in the small quiet town of Mt. Pleasant in America to fulfill his dream - to build his wondrous Museum of the Strange and Unusual, filled with fantastical displays of extraterrestrial beings, mythical creatures, and many other displays for which he was mocked. He wanted to proof them all wrong and reunite with his infant son over whom he had lost custody. The town looked forward to the museum's grand opening as it would bring many tourists and new jobs. Alas, the opening was delayed by years and then decades. Windlenot was almost ready to open it in 1980 after he had discovered mystical vessels from an ancient South American tribe. It was written in ancient stone tablets that they contained evil spirits - those vessels would be the crown piece in his museum!

And then... nothing... Nobody ever heard or saw him again. As coincidence would have it, at the time of Windlenot's disappearance, also two teenagers in town disappeared. Rumors have it that they may have entered the museum at night, never to be seen again. Now, for the last 15 years the museum has been deserted and is considered a haunted place.

The year is now 1995. You accepted a dare from your school friends to spend one night locked up inside the museum. As you enter through a secret passage, you soon learn the truth - the evil spirits, named Ixupi, that were kept captured inside the South American vessels were set free by somebody. Representing certain elements, they roam around the museum and hide inside wood, ashes, metal, cloth, water and other elements, and drain a part of your life essence if you approach them. The vessels themselves, each consisting of a container and its lid have been hidden around the museum. It is your task to find the vessels and talismans, properly match them and then capture the Ixupi with its proper vessel.

However, it's not that simple. The professor built puzzles in his museum that you need to solve in order to proceed. Blinded by his creativity, it never crossed his mind that these puzzles would become an obstacle in case of an emergency - it became his own undoing. Will you succeed where he failed and unravel the mystery before the Ixupi turn you into yet another missing person's case?

Shivers, designed by Marcia Bales, was created with Sierra's SCI engine. It was released for Windows in 1995 and the Macintosh in 1996. The game has a sequel, Shivers 2: Harvest of Souls although the stories are not related.
