Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers: 20th Anniversary Edition

General

Gabriel Knight is a down-on-his-luck horror novelist and bookstore owner in New Orleans. While his new assistant, Grace Nakimura, takes care of the shop, he's hoping his research into a string a voodoo murders around the city will give him a story for a bestseller. With some help of his old friend, police detective Mosely, as well as his own often-reckless macho-like attitude, Gabriel manages to obtain detailed information on the cases, but his research starts wearing on him. Tormented every night by nightmares of voodoo rituals, he begins to realize his dreams are not merely the result of his investigation, but are somehow connected to his own past.

He learns that his father and grandfather had the same haunting nightmares, with his grandfather fleeing his own family in his native country of Germany to try and escape the past - a family curse passed from generation to generation, going back as far as 1693, when one of his ancestors faced similar voodoo murders in Charleston and betrayed his oath through a dangerous love affair. Gabriel Knight learns he is the last in a long line of shadow hunters, those fated to fight the dark forces of the supernatural. It is his destiny to face the current events in New Orleans, to face himself, to face what his grandfather tried to escape from, to undo the tragedy of the family's past and restore the legacy of the shadow hunters.

Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers, which was first published in 1993 by Sierra On-Line, was probably the darkest most gripping game at the time, from the first animated sequence to the terrifying climax, every aspect of this psycho thriller put even the most seasoned of gamers at the tips of their toes. And although no Gabriel Knight title had been released since 1999's Blood of the Sacred, Blood of the Damned, the Sierra community kept pleading and maintaining hope for more Schattenjager adventures. Gabriel Knight designer and master story teller Jane Jensen responded in kind.

During the 2012 boom of Kickstarter projects, which resulted in projects like Leisure Suit Larry Reloaded and SpaceVenture, Jane Jensen and husband composer Robert Holmes also launched a kickstarter project which led to the foundation of their own game studio, Pinkerton Road, named after the location of their farmhouse in Pennsylvania. In addition they committed to develop and release not just one, but two games - Moebius: Empire Rising, and a full remake of the original Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers, for which Jane and Robert had obtained the permission to use its IP from the current Sierra owner, Activsion. Both games were made in collaboration with Phoenix Online Studios, with whom Jane already collaborated as creative consultant for the game Cognition: An Erika Reed Thriller.

The 20th Anniversary Edition of Gabriel Knight of course boosts far more detailed graphics and animations, as well as the remastered soundtrack by Robert Holmes. It also contains multiple new puzzles and even some new locations. The remake also features bonus content, such as original concept art, audio interviews, story boards and more. Possibly the most challenging part was to find a cast of voice actors that could somewhat match the star-studded cast of the 1993 original. Jason Victor, who first assumed the role of King Graham in Phoenix Online's The Silver Lining, took on the daring task of voicing Gabriel Knight, previously voiced by Tim Curry. Other actors took on roles previously occupied by Michael Dorn, Leah Remini, Mark Hamill and others, and managed to deliver a performance beyond the fans' expectations. We wholeheartedly agree with DigitalSpy's statement that Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers: 20th Anniversary decision is a remake done right.
