Platform: NEC PC-88

General description

The PC-8800 series, commonly shortened to PC-88, are a brand of Zilog Z80-based 8-bit home computers released by Nippon Electric Company (NEC) in 1981 and primarily sold in Japan.

The PC-8800 series sold extremely well and became one of the three major Japanese home computers of the 1980s, along with the Fujitsu FM-7 and Sharp X1. It was later eclipsed by NEC's 16-bit PC-9800 series, although it still maintained strong sales up until the early 90s.

The PC-88 and Sierra

Few Sierra games were released for the PC-88. Other than Sierra's Hi-Res Adventures series being ported to it, the PC-88 was the platform which Japanese developers, such as Game Arts, used to first publish their titles, such as the first releases of Thexder, Silpheed and Sorcerian. It was after Sierra founder Ken Williams' visit to Japan and the consequent agreement with these Japanese developers to sell their products through Sierra in the USA, that the Japanese titles were ported to other platforms such as the Apple IIGS and IBM PC.
