Following the recovery of Daventry's treasures in King's Quest I: Quest for the Crown, Graham is now king of the land. However life is rather lonely and he wants a queen by his side. The magic mirror shows him the image of a beautiful woman in an quartz tower, locked up by the evil witch Hagatha. Graham swaps his crown for his adventure cap and travels to the nearby land of Kolyma. His path is soon blocked by the Door of Destiny which requires him to bring the three Gems of Nature before allowing passage. To obtain each gem, Graham must face challenges under water in the kingdom of Neptune, high in the sky where the Cloud Spirit tests Graham's worthiness and even infiltrate in the castle of count Caldaur, a vampire. Meanwhile, an infiltrator in Daventry, known only as "The Father" tries to have Graham assassinated while he is not present in his own kingdom. Finally Graham enters the Tower Realm where Valanice awaits him, hoping Graham will pass the final obstacles.

This is AGDI's second remake but, unlike their remake of King's Quest 1: The Quest for the Crown, this time they greatly expanded the story, characters, puzzles and locations of the original King's Quest 2 while providing a brand new soundtrack. As such it is a whole new experience for those who played the original King's Quest 2 by Sierra On-Line, all while it still stays true to the original story.

Using Chris Jones' Adventure Game Studio engine, the game was first released in December 2002 but went through multiple upgrades, including the addition of voice actors, enhanced graphics and compatibility with Windows Vista and Windows 7, with the latest version being released in 2011. As in AGDI's remake of King's Quest 1, Josh Mandel once again voices the role of King Graham and John Bell provides the narration. AGDI would later also remake King's Quest 3, as well as Quest for Glory 2.
