The roots of Leisure Suit Larry go all the way back to 1981. Chuck Benton had created a text adventure game, called "Softporn Adventure" which was released by On-Line Systems. The game was about a man (the player) who needed to "score" with 3 women, making it a very controversial game for its time, and the game cover would become legendary as it shows Roberta Williams, along with 2 other women, naked in a jacuzzi. It was the only text adventure game ever published by Sierra On-Line.
Years later, Al Lowe came up with the idea to remake the game, but to add graphics and put a comic twist to it by turning the character into a loveable loser. In 1987 the first Larry game, Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards, was born. The story of the game is nearly entirely the same as the one of Softporn Adventure, with Larry going to a bar, a casino, taking taxis and so on. Even the puzzles are mostly the same.
The Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of Lounge Lizards is often referred to as the most pirated game in gaming history. It was called as such because, according to polls, nearly half of the computers (remember, it was 1987) had the game installed on it and yet, Sierra On-Line sold more hint books than actual copies of the game.
A game series is born
With the success of the first Larry game, Al Lowe started writing 2 more games in order to make it a Larry trilogy. That was considered a large game serie in those days.
