Dear Sierra fans,

It was most certainly a big (and not so pleasant) surprise to see that the Sierra Chest had entirely disappeared on Wednesday March 14. I immediately checked out my inbox to find an email from the host of the site, stating that:

"Early this morning, the server housing your account incurred an irrecoverable hardware failure resulting from a malfunctioning heatsink. Fortunately, we were able to recover the data on this server from its hard drives are are currently in the process of copying that data to a new server. Unfortunately, your website did incur downtime from to this failure, and due to the size of your account it will take a little while to complete the migration of your data. Please bear with us while we work quickly to restore access to all websites that were impacted by the outage."

While it was unfortunate that this happened, it did not sound like a total catastrophe. Unfortunately the host confirmed several days later that 1) they didn't have a backup of the site since it's bigger than 10GB and 2) that the hard drive was actually corrupted afterall. Brilliant...

So, since then we've been uploading our own backup which took nearly 2 weeks straight to get the Chest back up and running again. There is still some 20 gigabites of data missing, mostly the latest game additions to the site (screenshots and music files mostly), but also some of the largest game demos, since our backup was a couple of months old. So, while the site is up again, you may occasionally run into missing images and dead links. We continue to work on recovering those and expect also that to be fully recovered within the next two to three weeks. In addition, we are now making extra backups which will be continuously updated locally.

The important thing is, welcome back Sierra Chest!
