A screen appears with a list of all the missions for single player play, two player cooperative play, and two player head-to-head play, depending on which method of play is selected. If the mission name is checked, then you’ve already successfully completed the mission. If it has a + mark by it, it's an add-on mission and is not considered part of the original game. Make your selection and click on Load to start the mission. Click on Cancel to return to the Main Menu.

Multi-Player

The first screen you see when you select Multiplayer from the Main Menu gives you the option of choosing head-to-head or cooperative play. After you've made your selection, click Load to move to the Choose Mission menu. There are 15 missions specifically designed for cooperative play and 20 missions specifically designed for head-to-head play. If a head-to-head mission is chosen, then each player chooses a character, Jake or Garathe Den, and a character color. Both players may choose the same character and the same color to make things a little more interesting. After selections are made, the first mission description is displayed and you are ready to do battle in split-screen mode.

In the cooperative play, the mission will determine whether both players are the Hunters or the Hunted. Believe it or not, either way, you're buddies, with the same goal in mind: survive the degenerate onslaught. Your character roles are chosen for you by the mission. You may have to move through the missions to pick-up specific items, or you may simply have to outlast the enemies and their technology. You're not invincible to friendly fire either, so be careful where you aim. Along the way, each player will only be able to access specific items. You'll have to help each other accomplish tasks. If you've never owed your life to someone before, you will now.

In head-to-head, it is a simple deathmatch - winner takes all. It's you against the mutant world plus one more thinking enemy: your so-called "friend". You'll not only have to repel enemy attack, but you'll have to pound your opponent into oblivion as well. To make things even more exiting, you can insert a timer and a minimum number of kills which must have been achieved.

Game options:

Difficulty - set the difficulty to easy, medium, or hard depending on how gutsy you're feeling. Higher difficulty means faster enemy reaction and heavier damage to your health and armor.

Brightness - set the brightness level of your screen depending on how dark and gloomy you like your hunt.

Volume - set the music and sound effects volume levels depending on how gutsy your speakers are.

Input devices:

Click Input Devices from the Main Menu to select and customize the controllers that either one or two players will use. At the Input Devices screen, first click the particular controller under Player 1 or Player 2 that you want to customize, then click the Customize button.

Note: two players may both use the keyboard or both may use separate controllers at the same time.
